2020 turned out to be a nightmare for us, complete with piles of toilet paper, awkward Zoom meetings, and bleak days of chaos. This didn’t stop us from being creative, and we tried our best to move forward.

When it comes to design, we always keep an eye on the most recent trends. So after a handful of research, I made a list of web design trends that may inspire you in the future, whether you’re getting started with web design or redesigning your website.

Oversized Typography

Oversized typography is becoming mainstream in web design. Most websites use bold and large typography for improved readability and grabbing the user’s attention.

An example of this is from Florian Monfrini’s website. The website consists of bold typography, which pairs well with the artist’s paintings. Other examples include Pangram Pangram’s mini-website of Editorial New, Thibaud Allie’s Folio, and many more.

Emotional Design

The concept of Emotional design was developed by Donald Norman back in 2004, and it is now becoming trending recently. Web design isn’t only about how it looks but how it feels. This concept can deliver a message and makes users engage a bit.

3D Illustrations

3D visuals have increasingly been popular as a result of higher resolutions. High-quality graphics have been easily integrated into sites, leaving positive impressions on visitors, from quirky cartoons to simple shapes.

Sennep, a creative agency, uses 3D elements to add dimension to its website. This results in a stunning composition, and it’s a brilliant example of how minimalistic designs can complement 3D illustrations.

Retro & Experimental Fonts

During the pandemic, people are reaching out for nostalgia. It’s pretty much the same thing for web design, except that we shifted our focus on retro fonts. These fonts are attractive and sometimes playful. Perhaps even experimental as well.

Italian-based vintage clothing shop, Vintageria uses bold colors and 80's fonts, which reflect their brand’s playfulness. Other examples include Spotify’s Carnival Sounds Promotion which also experiments with type.

Gaussian Blur

Blurred elements in backgrounds are now trending in web design. These backgrounds are welcoming and have an organic feel to them, making them pleasing to the human eye.

Cosmic Collusion does this pretty well on their website. The subtle, red-yellow blur pairs really well with its bold typography. Another example is the background of Monograph Communications, which also pairs well with the type combination.
