Today, most people use dark mode for browsing because of many reasons — eyestrain, battery saving, etc. and yet some try to use plugins or flags to force dark mode on most websites.

Because of this trend, a new CSS syntax called prefers-color-scheme has been added to CSS3. It’s where the browser detects your system setting and will change it according to its settings. This year, we will see websites using the dark color theme or start offering a toggle for enabling dark mode on their website.

WebGL & Three.js

Since WebGL 2.0 was released, we see more websites using this. Designers also utilize their websites with Three.js, another javascript library that drives thousands (not millions) of 3D websites. Web developers can now work with shaders and create visual games and animation easier and also we’re going to see cool 3D websites made with WebGL.

SVG & SVG Filters

SVG and SVG Filters allow designers to create stunning, yet complicated effects without writing Javascript. You can create a realistic water effect or awesome image distortions from SVG filters or even combine SVG with CSS to create curve divs and animations.

Minimalism (Again)

Like last year’s web design trends, minimalism is still an ongoing trend today. With fewer elements and less Javascript to load, websites load much faster than ever before while still providing an elegant and clean look.

Narrative Data

Narrative data uses text and animations to tell a story. You can use this trend to tell a company’s story or create a history of a person. Webpages are the new storybook. This year, we will be seeing websites that tell their own story about themselves.

Unusual Navigation

Navigation creates necessary conditions for users to find what he/she is looking for but combining it with something unusual not just makes it awesome, but it creates interactivity of a website. Users can interact while finding useful information within the website itself and yet you could see interactive websites doing the same thing.
